This Acer Aspire One AOD255E-13639 is the black version of the Acer Aspire One AOD255E series. It is also available in other three classy colors: Blue, Grey, and a really nice shade of red.
This netbook doesn’t meet my needs for battery life as it is only 3 cell, thus you get about 4 hours from your battery under normal use. If you don’t know what ‘normal use’ means, you are not alone. I had to go off at a tangent to find out the meaning. Simply put, normal use means that you are not sitting on the beach, with the blazing sun beating down on to your netbook. Neither are you sitting in your car with the netbook sitting on a sun filled dash –that would be an awkward way to work anyway. If you are going to be working in extreme heat, or running heavy duty programs, the battery will not last anywhere near 4 hours.
So having said the battery life doesn’t meet my needs, I still spent a long time looking at the Acer AOD255E-13639 because it is super light, and, it has one of the largest web cams I have found in a netbook. It weighs less than 2 ½ lbs (probably due to the smaller battery), and light weight is always a big plus when you are taking your netbook with you where ever you go. Of course, if you upgrade your battery or carry a spare then you lose the benefit of the light weight. This is also one of the thinnest netbooks you will see in this price range – it’s actually less than one inch.
While the .3 meg web cams certainly work well, if you are wanting some extra sharpness and detail you will certainly get that with the extra megapixel this baby has; it’s a whopping 1.3megs. It’s definitely the major selling point for some buyers.
The screen is a nice size at 10.1 inches and, if you need a bigger screen to watch a special movie, just get yourself the connector to hook up to your TV and you are good to go. Some of the newer TVs even let you stream movies direct from the internet and if you are big on streaming that is something you should consider.
The keyboard is almost full size and it also has larger keys. That doesn’t make sense to me because I would have thought that regular sized keys may have taken up less space and allowed for a full sized keyboard. Having said that, it’s a good sized keyboard and shouldn’t give you any problems with typing.
I love the touch pad on this Acer, there is something about being able to close and expand my fingers to make the same thing happen on the screen that just tickles me. It’s super cool and actually fun to use.
The remaining features are fairly standard: a 250 GB hard drive and a 1GB RAM. Although the Ram CAN be expanded to 2 GB, it is not recommended by Acer. There are several methods to add the RAM and, if you are so inclined, you can find the various procedures on the internet. It isn’t as easy as taking out a couple of screws underneath the netbook and sliding in the RAM, it’s more complicated and involves taking out the keyboard. It’s certainly doable though.
Netbooks are for people who need to carry their work around with them and sync the files with their main computer when they get home. What the Acer AOD255E-13639 gives you is more than enough to stay in touch with friends and family via Skype video(once you install Skype), and, to do email and word processing when you are on the road. If you don’t specifically need the extra megapixels in the web camera, I would suggest forgoing trying to add 1 GB of RAM and get a netbook that is easily upgradable – and keeps the warranty intact.
As with nearly all netbooks, this too comes preloaded with software. Most of it you won’t want, or need, and, it’s also just 30 day trial version. If you don’t want to use it, don’t let it clog up your hard drive, just delete it. The Windows 7 starter pack is typically adequate for most buyers, if you want to do spread sheets and publishing, you should probably consider upgrading to the full pack. Windows 7 pack or downloading some free office software.
